Chapter Eight
Blake ignored rational thought as his mouth found Elizabeth’s and she returned his kiss. Her lips made him temporarily forget the demons set on destroying their daughter.
Kissing Elizabeth hadn’t even entered his thoughts when he’d suggested dinner, but now his mind went blank and all he could do was relish her touch and the tenderness he felt behind it. He deepened the kiss, trying to rationalize his actions—he was simply offering comfort.
Right. A hug did that just fine—kissing crossed the line.
Pulling her closer, he allowed his fingers to touch the soft fabric of her white shirt. The warmth of her skin began to erase the emptiness of the past few years that had made him take ridiculous chances and take every adrenaline-junkie opportunity that had crossed his path. Her touch grounded him in the here and now. Kissing her was the right thing to do.
Blake heard the squeak of sneakers on the floor heading toward them and reluctantly lifted his head. Jordan’s nurse smiled at him before she walked into the room. The coziness dissipated into the sterile atmosphere, laden with the underlying scent of antiseptic and the low hum of equipment in the background. They were in the hallway—what had he been thinking?
“That was Rebecca, wasn’t it?” Color infused Elizabeth’s cheeks, yet her eyes remained closed.
“Yes.” He watched her struggle to compose herself. He’d been inside enough hospitals to know that by morning the entire staff would have heard that the stoic and formidable Dr. Randall was found in a lip-lock with Jordan’s father in the hallway on the fourth floor.
Great. He’d just kissed Elizabeth Randall. Jordan’s mother. His father’s protégé, Thomas Randall’s widow. Now he knew he was certifiable. On his day off tomorrow, he needed to find something crazy to do to get his focus off her. Maybe the high-speed racing school had a last-minute opening, or Eric would want to go parachuting with him.
Elizabeth opened her eyes, and backed off. Confusion replaced the warmth and sparkle he’d seen earlier. Straightening her shoulders, she wiped her lips with her fingertips, stepped backward and then stared at him boldly. “Please don’t let that happen again.”

Sleep eluded Elizabeth that night. By the next morning, exhaustion had become an intimate friend. But not as intimate as the kiss she’d shared with Blake. Why had she responded to him that way? She should have hauled off and slapped him for taking such liberties, yet she’d kissed him right back.
Was she really that attracted to him? They had a connection because of Jordan, but was that it? Or did her reaction have a deeper meaning? Butterflies filled her stomach and heat scorched her cheeks.
Having Blake around wasn’t good for her peace of mind, especially when she had to focus on her daughter and her patients.
At the hospital, Elizabeth pulled a chart and glanced at it quickly before she knocked on the partially open door and smiled at the seven-year-old boy and his parents waiting in the room. “Hi.
